How to apply for EU grants?
EU grants definition: The EU makes available grants for collaborative projects to address strategic areas of importance for the EU, its members and its citizens. There is a range of EU-funding opportunities, most of these projects are collaborative, so you need multiple partners from at least 3 EU countries. Non-EU countries can also participate under certain conditions. Partners can come from all sectors; public, private and nonprofit. The EU grants portal is where you can see the current open grants available. You should check it regularly to see new calls for funding. The range of EU programmes are wide but here are some of the main ones:
EU grants for NGOs: most programmes are open to partners from the nonprofit sector including NGOs and social enterprises. Europe for Citizens is one programmes aimed specifically at the sector but NGOs regularly participate in INTERREG, ERASMUS, LIFE, CREATIVE EUROPE and HORIZON.
EU grants for small business: most programmes are open to partners from the business community, especially small-to-medium sized businesses (SME). COSME grants focus on SME and HORIZON focuses on increasing innovation, research and development within SMEs.
EU grants for education: Erasmus+ is the EU’s grants for education programme. It has 3 strands; mobility for learners and educators, innovation in education and learning, innovation in education policy.
EU environmental grants: LIFE is the specific programme for environmental projects and climate change. 25% of all EU funding in the next 7-year programme, 2021-2027, will be spent on climate change and transition. There are also opportunities for environmental projects within INTERREG and HORIZON.
EU research grants: EU funding for HORIZON 2020, the EU programme for science, research and innovation. It is a very large programme with €80 billion in the current budget. It covers basic research, applied research, innovation and addressing societal challenges.
